I accidentally created a "spin-off" account with AOL but realized it immediately and called to cancel the account. I was told the account was cancelled and that many other customers had been experiencing the same problem.

AOL continued to bill me for the "spin-off" account and when I called to complain, I was told that there was no way the account was being billed because it was closed. I explained that yes, the account was being billed, and I expected a refund.

After over a month of talking to countless customer service and customer care representatives, I finally spoke with a woman who told me that she saw the error, she told me that the computer showed that I did in fact cancel the "spin-off" account the day it was created and it was a "computer glitch" that was causing the continued billing.

She told me that she was very sorry about the error and she personally would make sure the account would not be billed again. She also told me that her supervisor was right there with her ready to approve a refund for the months of service I was incorrectly charged for. When I hung up the phone I was satisfied and assured that all was taken care of and my refund would arrive in 7-10 business days.

Over a month has gone by and still no refund. I have talked to many more people at AOL, but no one can tell me why I have not received my reimbursement. The last person I spoke with informed me that half of my refund was denied, but the other portion should be in my account with 2-3 days. It has been 6 days and nothing.

After reading all of these other complaints, I searched around and found a website for trying to start a class action lawsuit. I have submitted a complaint and encourage anyone reading this to do the same. Maybe together we can get something accomplished. The web site is: www.BigClassAction.com

AOL's "money making scam!"

AUTHOR: Betty - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, August 12, 2004

I have just read your compalint about AOL and I am having almost exactly the same problem for 5 months now, but I currently have no hope for a refund or any kind of end in sight to this nightmare! I'm like you and would jsut like an end to this, but like I told my husband, even if I do get the refund and an end to unauthorized cahrges, I still won't be happy.

I know people that have just let it go because they were tired of fighting them, well I don't know about you, but I was born to fight and am willing to take this to the highest possible level to give AOL what they have coming! They can't keep getting away with this!

I would like to communicate with you via email so that maybe we could do something about this, and maybe other people with the same or similiar problem with AOL will come forward and we can STOP AOL ONCE AND FOR ALL!

No resolution, battling with AOL for the past 4 months

AUTHOR: Darcy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 08, 2004

I have been battling with AOL for the past 4 months regarding the other half of the refund I am entitled to but have not yet received. I have talked with countless representatives who seem so understanding and willing to help yet the refund they promise never arrives.

As I stated in a previous post, I wrote to the Better Business Bureau who then sent AOL a letter concerning this matter. About 3 weeks later I received a copy of AOL's reply letter to the Better Business Bureau. In this letter, Heidi Jongquist from the billing department stated that they were unable to locate the account in which I wrote about in my complaint. She then stated this issue would be resolved as soon as I could send her copies of the statements showing double billing, my bank account numbers, the routing numbers and any credit/debit card numbers I have used as my "method of billing" for AOL.

Funny how Heidi was unable to locate my account when all of the customer service people I spoke with had no problem finding it and seeing the problem.

I have sent all of this information to AOL and have received no response. The last representative I spoke with assured me he could get me the refund I deserved (without all of the paperwork previously requested) and then gave me his email address and told me to feel free to contact him with any further questions. As of today I have sent him over 10 emails which he fails to respond to.

If anyone experiencing the same kind of problem with AOL knows who to contact (other than the Better Business Bureau) for help please respond. I am at my wit's end but refuse to let AOL get away with this.

AOL refund issue partially resolved

AUTHOR: Darcy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 11, 2004

On Friday February 6, 2004, I contacted via email the specific AOL representative that had promised me a full and prompt refund. In the email I recapped the many conversations, emails and instant messages that had occurred between the two of us. I then explained that I had STILL (24 days after the refund was supposedly issued) not received my refund. I asked that she please find out what was happening and get back to me as soon as possible. I also requested that if she could not handle this matter to please forward it to a person who could.

At the end of the email I mentioned that I had filed a report with the Better Business Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission, Rip-Off Report.com and Big Class Action.com. I alo stated that I would like a speedy resolution and that I was becoming VERY impatient.

Less than 5 minutes after I sent the email, I received a response. The woman stated that she did not know why I hadn't received my refund and that she was once again very sorry for the problems I had been experiencing. She told me that she had just talked to a billing supervisor and they were once again processing my refund. I was told I would definately have the amount of money in question deposited into my bank account within 10 days.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2004, (a mere 4 days later) I did in fact have a refund deposited into my account. The problem is -- it is only half of the amount that was "stolen" from me to pay for the cancelled account.

I am currently working with the Better Business Bureau to collect the rest of the money owed to me by AOL.
