Delaware City, DelawareI purchased a vehicle from this car dealer and it will not pass inspecton. I took it to motor vehicle and it failed for catalytic converter. I took it to the Nissan dealer and they looked at it and tell me that the damage went on long enough for the car to need a new motor to the tune of $4000.
What can be done with these car dealers that rip off people. They say they do not know what they are getting when they get these cars from the auction. They know exactly what they are getting. Your money and no responsibility to fix what is wrong.
I agree with the other complaint. These people are very rude to the customer. Except for the one salesman named Brian, I thought he was very nice. I now know why, it was because he was swindling me. I am in the process of looking for a lawyer. I don't believe they should get away with this.

Your Nissan Dealer is the thief here
I'm a master mechanic, a ctylitic converter CANNOT cause enough damage to ruin an engine.

RE:
I did take the vehicle to a Nissan dealer. They said no the CATALYTIC converter will not cause engine damage BUT the catalytic converter does consume the oil from the engine and this is what causes the damage. But no matter what the problem is it IS big enough that the car will not pass inspection and the dealer screwed me out of my money and now I do not have a vehicle to drive. It is their responsibility to make sure that I have a quality vehicle. IS IT NOT? What would you do if this happened to you? Even though you are a MASTER mechanic it still would not be okay for a vehicle that you are paying payments on is not a quality vehicle.
Jim is correct
I agree that a dead catalytic converter means that your car is not going to pass emissions. That is not a good thing. Assuming that you did not buy the car with any guarantee that it would pass emissions, you may still have a chance in small claims court if your state requires that the sellers of cars warrant that they will pass emissions (you'll have to research that on your own). Otherwise, if it was an 'as is' sale, you're probably out of luck. By agreeing to buy a car 'as is' then you accepted the car with all it's faults.
Besides that, Jim was correct in his post that the folks at the Nissan dealer are ripoffs. The story they told you about the catalytic converter consuming engine oil is pure bunk. The catalytic converter is attached to your exhaust pipe. It does not have any connection to the engine's lubrication system. The only thing that happens when you run a car with an inoperative catalytic converter is that your exhaust emissions are dirtier.
The original dealer may have scammed you on a car with a dead cat converter, but what we're trying to point out is that the Nissan dealer is trying to scam you for even more cash by telling you that you need a new engine because of it.

You were right but...
Yes you were right and I did have it looked at by more than one mechanic (not the Nissan dealer). I gave them no information of having it looked at prior to this. They did tell me that that cat conv. is bad but the engine is also bad. I did not buy the car 'as is' at least that is not what the buyer's guide (sticker on the window) says. WARRANTY. But is seems as though the car dealer has fled town. I have filed complaints with the BBB the FTC the Attorney General and the newspaper. I also called my 51st lawyer yesterday and no one will help me. I finally did call the loan company back and told them to come pick up their car and they told me I am responsible for the balance even though I only had the car three months and it is sitting in my drive way undrivable. NO TAGS NO INSURANCE. The temp tag expired so I took it off my insurance and now I have NO VEHICLE. Don't know what to do now!!! STUCK!!!!
